Happy Valentine's Day to all of you.
I went whale watching today with Me-Shell and some of our friends. They took there Kayaks, and we took our Stand Up Paddle boards out to Makena Landing in South Maui. It was such an amazing experience and truly life changing.
We were in the ocean for about an hour or so, when we just stopped paddling and felt like taking a rest. The five of us were enjoying the sun and great views. Casual talk amongst friends, when someone started joking around about how a whale might swim under our surfboards and Kayaks while we sat here.
Not even 2 minutes later I was looking down into the water and I saw a dark shape below the surface. After looking closer at the water I saw that it was a whale. As we sat there on our boards shocked, I saw that the tail was actually attached to a mom whale feeding a baby whale. The whales were only about 15 ft below the service of the water. Everyone started to freak out, but was also really interested in seeing the whales. The Mom whale was around 40-50 ft long and looked so beautiful. It was one of the most amazing things I have ever seen!
After about 5 minutes of watching, the whales starting moving, within seconds the 2 whales got to the surface to get air. When the 2 whale were getting air, we noticed it wasn't just the 2 whales we were watching just a few minutes ago. There were 3 adult whales and 2 baby whales 10 ft from our boards! As they came up to get more air, it felt like you could touch them, they were so close! I couldn't believe how close we were to these amazing animals. The whales gave us a private show for a few minutes and then moved on.
It is truly moments like this, that make me feel so blessed to live in such a natural and beautiful place. No boats, no tours just friends in nature enjoying time together and experiencing the true beauty of life in the islands.
If you enjoy whale watching January and February are the best times in Maui to see whales. This weekend is whale day on sunday. If you are near Kihei, stop by kalama park and see the parade and free concerts in the park.
